In their Science classes, Year 5 have been learning the unit: Materials and the students have been investigating solids, liquids and gases. The students took part in different experiments when they were offline and they have also taken part in experiments online such as slow evaporation and testing solubility.

Material Transformation Science Experiment

In order to help them remember the technical Science vocabulary from this unit, the students created videos of them showing how to do the Science experiments. By teaching others it helps them to have a deeper understanding of what they're learning and it can help them to remember what they've learnt. It also encourages them to practice their English speaking skills and presenting skills too whilst we are offline. As you can see from the video, the students have done an amazing job and they're all presenting in their second - or even their third language!

Other students can benefit from their videos by watching and learning how they can do fun Science activities at home with their siblings or parents using minimal equipment. Whilst we are offline, the students are unable to take part in some of the practical activities that they might usually do at school, but this is a way for them to take part in practical activities where they can learn lots and be away from screens. You can do all of the experiments by using things that you have around the house - but students should please make sure they ask for parental permission and help to clean up any mess afterwards.

Thank you to the supportive parents and siblings of the students in Year 5 for helping them organise the materials and film their Science experiments.

Amazing work, Year 5! You should continue to be proud of yourselves for your hard work online and your brilliant presenting skills and explanations! Keep it up!

This activity links to the following Cambridge learning objectives:

5Cp.02 Know the main properties of water (limited to boiling point, melting point, expands when it solidifies, and its ability to dissolve a range of substances) and know that water acts differently from many other substances.

5Cp.01 Know that the ability of a solid to dissolve and the ability of a liquid to act as a solvent are properties of the solid and liquid.

5Cc.03 Investigate and describe the process of dissolving and relate it to mixing.

Material Transformation Science Experiment (5)

5Cc.02 Understand that dissolving is a reversible process and investigate how to separate the solvent and solute after a solution is formed.

5TWSp.03 Make predictions, referring to relevant scientific knowledge and understanding within familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

5TWSc.06 Carry out practical work safely.

5TWSp.01 Ask scientific questions and select appropriate scientific enquiries to use.

5TWSa.03 Make a conclusion from results informed by scientific understanding.
