Splash into the Sea! – Our Four-Week Ocean Adventure
Written by Ms. Julie, June 2026In this unit, our Nursery Tiger class stepped into a wondrous underwater world through playful, hands-on exploration. Starting with “the sea and its hidden world,” they discovered marine life—blue whales, conchs, hermit crabs—and learned to describe their traits and connections. The unit blended sensory play, art, science, language, and fine motor skills, building knowledge in authentic contexts.

Week 1: Meeting the Ocean. Children listened to waves and seagulls, tasted salt, and watched ocean documentaries to grasp the sea’s vastness. They made blue sensory bottles—layering sand, shells, glitter, water, and blue dye—shouting “Sea wave!” as the “waves” swirled. A word game introduced the Chinese character 大 (big), which they could recognize and read independently.Week 2: Exploring Blue Whales. The focus shifted to the ocean’s giant—the blue whale. Children reviewed 大, understanding “a big sea holds a big whale.” Reading Big Blue Whale and watching clips, they were amazed to learn a blue whale’s tongue can hold an elephant! They identified whales in a model ocean, then crafted whale art and painted wave scenes, grasping that blue whales live in vast seas.Week 3: Discovering Conchs and Hermit Crabs. From “big” to “small,” children touched conch shells, listened to “the sea’s voice,” and sculpted spiral shells with clay. Reading The Snail and the Whale, they hunted for “big” and “small,” practiced strokes 撇 (left-falling) and 捺 (right-falling), and wrote both characters. A documentary revealed hermit crabs have no hard shells—they must use empty conch shells as tiny homes. Adorable!

Week 4: Hermit Crab’s Home & the Character “上”. Through movement and games, children learned 大, 小, and 上 (up/on), mastering strokes 横 (horizontal), 竖 (vertical), 撇, 捺. For 上, they acted out “crab climbing onto a shell.” Using last week’s conch shells, they added eyes, antennae, and legs to make their own hermit crabs, understanding “a small animal carrying a small house.” They also met coral, sea anemones, starfish, sea urchins, and lanternfish. Reading A House for Hermit Crab, they enjoyed the tale of a crab finding a new shell and inviting friends to decorate it. Learning that coral is “the ocean animal’s home,” they painted colorful coral onto their sensory bottles.

Through this thematic journey, children gained rich knowledge of marine life and made visible progress in language, fine motor skills, and emotional growth. More importantly, they learned to observe and discover through play, cultivating curiosity and love for the sea. From blue sensory bottles to crawling hermit crabs, from giant whales to tiny conchs—this ocean encounter will shine in their childhood memories.

Exploring 3D Composition and Installation ArtWritten by Ms. Daisy , June 2026Year 10 and 11, students studied three‑dimensional composition. Using simple materials, they built a variety of forms, laying the groundwork for future interdisciplinary projects. They also explored installation art: each group tackled the same theme, brainstormed ideas, and then created installations with mixed media. This process not only deepened their conceptual thinking but also fostered creativity.

SPORTS AT BIS — End of Term Sports Newsletter

Written by Mr. Jason , June 2026This term has been an exciting and successful one for sport at BIS, with students taking part in and hosting several fantastic events.
Firstly, we were invited to participate in a primary football tournament at CLS, where we took eleven students to represent the school. Our students were outstanding throughout the day, demonstrating excellent teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship. They scored the most goals in the tournament while conceding none, earning the admiration of both spectators and competing schools. Their impressive performances saw them reach the final, where they narrowly missed out on first place. Although they finished as runners-up, the students should be incredibly proud of their achievements and the way they represented BIS. They truly made the school proud and deserve tremendous praise for their efforts.Building on this success, BIS hosted a Secondary Fun Day, which included a series of football matches and activities. The level of competition was excellent, and it was wonderful to see so many students, teachers, and staff embracing the spirit of the event. There was plenty of skill on display, alongside a great deal of enthusiasm and enjoyment. The teachers’ match was played in high spirits, with both teams giving their all in an entertaining 2–2 draw. The students’ tournament that involved a mixture of boys and girls teams was eventually won by the Red Team, whose attacking play and goal-scoring form proved unstoppable throughout the day. Congratulations to the deserving champions. The PE Department would also like to thank everyone who helped make the day such a success, particularly the Student Council for their support in organising the event. Finally, all students have now completed their final PE assessments for the term. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate every student for their hard work, determination, and willingness to challenge themselves throughout the year. It has been wonderful for Ms Vicky and me to see how much progress and development each of you has made. You should all be proud of your achievements and the effort you have shown. We hope you enjoy a well-earned rest over the summer break and look forward to seeing you continue your sporting journey next year.
