In this issue, our teachers are excited to share highlights of BIS student learning across Primary and Secondary. In Primary, Year 1 students have been measuring, comparing, and collaborating through their hands-on Measurement unit. In Secondary, Years 7–9 have been connecting language with the world around them through creative writing and real-world themes. It’s wonderful to see their curiosity, teamwork, and confidence growing every day.

Year 1 Measurement Unit

Written by Ms. Zanie, January 2026

Over the past two weeks, our Year 1 students have been busy exploring the measurement unit, with a focus on length and mass. The learners were introduced to key target vocabulary such as short, shorter, shortest, centimetres, heavy, and light, which they used confidently during lessons and discussions.

To begin our work on length, students measured their shoes and classroom objects using non-standard units, such as building blocks. This hands-on approach helped them understand the concept of measuring before moving on to using standard measuring tools like rulers and measuring tapes. Measurements took place both inside and outside the classroom, making learning engaging and meaningful.

For the mass component of the unit, students compared objects by holding them and describing whether they felt heavier or lighter. We concluded this part of the unit by creating our own balance scales, which the learners used to check and confirm their predictions about object mass.

Throughout the unit, the students demonstrated excellent collaboration and teamwork, particularly during the practical activities. It was wonderful to see them sharing ideas, taking turns, and supporting one another while learning.

Well done, Year 1, for your enthusiasm and effort during this unit!

Exploring Language Through the World: Year 7–9 English Highlights

Written by Mr. Andy, January 2026

This term our students have been exploring exciting themes that connect language with the world around them. In Year 7, we journeyed through The Great Outdoors, practicing descriptive writing, sensory detail, and vivid verb choices to bring landscapes to life. Students thrived on capturing light, texture, and weather in their scenes and poems.

Year 8 tackled Natural Resources, where analytical reading met real-world relevance. We examined sources, weighed evidence, and debated sustainable practices. Writing assignments invited clear argumentation, blended with creative responses that spotlighted voices from diverse communities.

Year 9 focused on Wellbeing, a timely theme that encouraged reflective journaling and empathy. Pupils crafted persuasive pieces about mental health, resilience, and daily routines that nurture positive mindsets. We emphasized tone, structure, and audience awareness to convey care and clarity.

Class Highlights:

- Year 7 launched a collaborative student presentation with classroom discussion and questions.

- Year 8 produced multimedia arguments featuring posters and practised writing figurative language.

- Year 9 wrote a news article in relation to body language use around the world and debated an issue related to wellbeing.

Upcoming: we’ll finish with a portfolio of polished pieces and a parent showcase of Year 7 and 9 work. Thank you for your continued support of our English journey.
